SPEAKER/PROGRAM

Becky Toothaker introduced Kurt Garascia, Assistant Vice President Asset Management Group at Norway Savings Bank.  Kurt reviewed the credit crisis and the government response!  The credit crisis is now one year old as of September 15th.  A year ago is when Lehman Brothers announced they were filing for bankruptcy.  At that time they were the 5th largest bank.  The exposure was felt worldwide, even Norway Savings Bank has some exposure.
Many people had invested into Money Market Mutual Funds at that time.  Lehman had issued debt on these notes.  Once they announced their intent to file bankruptcy investors pulled their money out of these funds and moved them into FDIC insured funds.  The impact of those funds being pulled was enormous.  Many large, very well positioned companies depended on these monies for short term cash flow.  As an effort to help alleviate the impact the government stepped in and guaranteed all of those $’s for one year.
A good sign the economy is improving is the one year guarantee has expired and when that happened investors did not pull out of the funds.  The stock market two years ago was t 14,000; at the lowest point it was at 6,500.  This past quarter (July – September) the market increased more than 20%, the best quarter since 1998.  This is another good sign that the economy is improving.
The question out there is the economy going to stand on its own after all these government programs end…Cash for Clunkers was one of the best programs that helped with the economy.  The response was overwhelming and helped the automakers bring back employees and start production again.  Sales are still slow but they are selling.
