Katy is the co-founder of Project Aware that started five years ago with a grant from the State of Maine. Project Aware started by creating an awareness of prescription abuse by teenagers by talking to schools all over the State. When the grant ended, the project turned into a non-profit. It was based in the Biddeford-Saco area which created two movies that were written and produced by the teens involved. She then brought Project Aware to Oxford Hills. Currently the group consists of seven teens here at Oxford Hills who have reached out to more than 950 teens and 75 adults last year in their presentations. Katy shared a video with the group that had kids talking about the “Teens for Change Summit” which told the story of what the group was all about. The mission statement for Project Aware is: Empower Young People to Lead! The group participates in the Open Mic Night at Cafe Nomad (started by this group) and how much success it had seen. They will be doing a follow-up to the Summit to determine what the successes have been and the next steps. For more information please visit their website: www.projectaware.net They continue to look for funding to establish a “home” in the Oxford Hills and allow them to continue to focus on our area.
