ANNOUNCEMENTS

Auction – Sarah reported on the successful weekend efforts.  Each club should be getting about $6,000 from the proceeds of the Auction/Flea Market and Red Sox Tickets (final #’s to be determined this week).  The storage unit contents we received really helped this year.  Suggestion was made to place an ad in the local papers each month reminding the community that we take donations all year long..

Pancake Breakfast – Helga reported that we have deposited $2,107 from the breakfast and not all the proceeds have been accounted for yet.  Bill S. commented on the number of donations received at the table this year.

Thank You! – Many thanks to all the members, spouses, children and friends that helped out this past weekend!  It is very much appreciated!

A very special thanks goes out to Sarah for all her hard work on the Auction!

SPEAKER/PROGRAM

Jane introduced Stephanie and Julie Harlow as our speakers.  They recently went on a mission trip to Mexico with the Pine Tree Academy.  The Senior Class (14 students) from the school worked with physicians from Park View Medical Center and Maine Medical Center to distribute clothing, vaccinations, and provide medical care for a small town outside of Belize. They slept in thatched roof huts in the area and one of the participants was a chef who prepared food using locally grown items.  The village has a large sugar cane crop that they burn and then harvest.  Harvesting of the crop is a “celebration” for the whole community and they were able to witness that first hand..

The physician group treated 50-100 people each day; the students distributed toothbrushes and toothpaste to the patients as they waited.  There was a 10 year old boy who arrived at the clinic and had been misdiagnosed previously.  It was determined that the boy had a heart defect and needed surgery.  Maine Medical Center is working on getting the boy sent here to do the surgery.

The students brought over a half ton of clothing with them to distribute to the impoverished.  They distributed the clothing, eyeglasses, vitamins, etc. to many villagers.  The students also helped reconstruct a local church.  They strongly encouraged anyone who is interested in helping others to look into a mission trip such as this as it is extremely rewarding.
